About Us
Slow and Steady Farm is a small no-till vegetable farm focused on soil health, carbon sequestration, and farming at a human scale. Started in 2021, we grow on a half acre in Greenbank, WA. Our goal is to provide the freshest food to the community while being excellent stewards of the soil by using regenerative practices. Some of our favorite crops to grow and eat are Garlic, Shallots, Carrots, Collards, Peppers, Corn, Beans, and Squash.
Practices
Rather than tilling our whole field, we use tarps, hand tools, compost, and cover cropping. This allows the soil structure to remain intact, supporting a more diverse ecosystem of worms, beetles, snakes! and other soil creatures which in turn helps to grow healthier plants. By using these practices, the organic material in the soil increases and actually removes CO2 from the atmosphere! We create our own compost with our vegetable wastes and manures from Whidbey farmers. We utilize cover cropping extensively with Buckwheat, Sudan Grass, Wheat, Rye, Clover and Radish in different blends depending on the time of year. Our goal is to keep the soil covered and plants growing in the soil for as much of the year as possible.
We're not certified organic but we follow organic practices. Our small size allows us to spend a lot of time observing the plants and soil on every square foot of our farm, allowing us to address any issues quickly. We never use synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides or fungicides. Pests are usually not an issue for healthy plants and we use techniques like row cover, hand removal, water blasts, and mild soap first. If it is needed we use products based on natural ingredients that are approved for organic use like Sluggo and Bt.
